CHURCH AT VELACHERY

A local body of believers and followers in Christ without gender, racial and linguistic differences meeting regularly at Velachery, Chennai for the purpose of worshipping, serving God and to fulfill the commission of Jesus Christ.

While many follow

human traditions and philosophies,

authority of organised leaders,

earthly resource centres,

We consider

Bible as our manual,

God is our father, Christ is our head and leader, Holy Spirit is our guide and helper,

earthly life an opportunity to love and serve fellow beings,

heaven as the source of power and the final destination.

HOW IT BEGAN?

On the Independence Day (15th August) of 1999 at Mizpa Cottage- the residence of Dr. K. Joy David, Gandhi Road- a group of local Christians consisting of students, faculty and professionals started gathering with an intention to practice New Testament pattern of house churches with simplicity and warmness of fellowship. Christian believers of two local gatherings at Maraimalai Nagar and Anna Nagar also joined with them. Later, it moved to 147, Gandhi Road and continued to gather for worship and Bible studies in the upper room for nearly 8 years. There were regular leadership training under Dr. K. Joy David and K. Abraham Thomas. The evening gospel meetings with songs and skits were special memorable occasions and it attracted many to Christ.

In 2008 April 1, the church moved to 91, Sankaran Avenue, Velachery bypass road and spiritually gifted leaders were recognized. There were workshops, seminars and group studies on various topics especially on theology, Bible surveys and family. The gospel meetings on evenings with different contemporary topics were opportunities to communicate the message of Jesus to the world around. Regular Bible studies/Bible camps with teachers like Dr. R. Gnanahran, Dr. George Irimpan, Joseph Panachi, George Christy and Stephan David added much spiritual value and fervor. Mission visits to North India, North East and Nepal provided us new vision and ministry needs.

Church is the greatest institution of Christ in human history and it goes beyond time and space limit!

However, it is manifested today in small local units with its weakness and limitation.

We thank God for all that in the past and trust in Him for future directions.
